Scooter Riders - Are Performance and Mileage Issues? Here's a Great Way to Improve Them Both!

Here's a relatively cheap method for grabbing that last ounce of performance from your scooter! OK boys and girls...this article is designed to get you more than a little bit pumped up about your scooter - to boost your pride a bit. For some reason, scooter riders are an overlooked lot or thought less of (take heed, Harley folk...if they wave at you, wave back, huh?) and it's just not fair!

We all go down the road on 2 wheels and we all face similar risks and challenges when we're out there.

If you like foolin' 'round with your li'l guy or you like others to do it for you and you'd like to snag a coupla more ponies out of it, here's a quick 'n dirty way to do it. You can simply swap out the exhaust system and re-jet the carb or dial in the fuel injectors.

If you're familiar with changing out the jets in a carburator and you can spin a wrench, you can save some bucks by doing it yourself. If your mechanical abilities are dicey at best or if you have a fuel-injected unit, and you don't own a Dynojet Power Commander or a calibration tool like it, let the folks at your favorite shop take the heat. They can easily add these pipes and dial in the injection-system for you after the installation.

Before you do anything though, if your little putt's under warranty, as a safety precaution (keeping your money safe that is...) read your warranty and make sure that such an upgrade will not violate any portion of it. If there will be a violation, IMHO, the smartest thing to do is to sit tight and wait 'til it's past the point of coverage for your bike.

I looked around and read customer reports on exhaust systems for scooters and the one that came up repeatedly was the Leo Vince 4 Road Exhaust system. Why do I look only at customer reports and ratings? Because these folks are usually just honest. They have no axe to grind...unless a product is not what it is purported to be (then they'll grind like hell sometimes.) No one is sponsoring them. They don't buy full page ads in the 'zines. The ones that write good things about an item are doing so simply because they like the item! Gimme the buyer's opinion any time. As I said, honesty!

Anyway, the Leo Vince 4 Road Exhaust system had comments like "Best Bang for the Buck!" and these rated 5 stars all 'round. This IS a solid piece of equipment made with one thing in mind...to help your scooter move down the ribbon into the 'greased lightning' category (well...greased lightning for scooters, anyway!)

Two or four-stroke, our motors are no different in requiring good aspiration than any other internal combustion engine, gas, diesel, LPG, even hydrogen...for anything sucking in O2, the freer the flow, the easier it is for the engine to work, the more horsepower that's generated...It's about reducing resistance anywhere you can, mechanically or aerodynamically. That's why turbo-chargers and blowers are used to increase horsepower and torque in racing engines...they force air into the fuel system...going beyond reducing resistance, these devices make resistance a non-sequitur. The less resistance that's encountered, the less throttle it takes to move anything on down the road.

Within the context of this dynamic, your scooter is no different than you...the less inhibited your breathing is when you run or do strenuous physical activity, the better you perform. If you don't believe me, the next time you go running, or pump iron, or skip rope, or have sex, try putting a gas-mask over your face and see how long it takes for you to max out and rip the damned thing off, (Hmmm....maybe your partner might LIKE the mask...maybe I'll write that article another time.) Breathing is essential for us and for our fuel-driven gear. Now you can be as kind to your scooter as you are to yourself!

Further, these exhaust systems will give your scooter a throatier, perhaps more aggressive sound...not necessarily louder, just throatier. If you're out toolin' 'round with your buds, yours is gonna be the scoot that stands out...and in a great way!

With that small engine on your scooter, a horsepower gain of five to fifteen or more of those ponies will make a substantial difference...especially if you're carrying a passenger. From a safety standpoint, you never know...you might need that additional power to escape from a critical situation where it makes more sense for you to hit it than it does to hit the brakes.

These exhaust systems are pure quality through and through. Each one is designed specifically for your model's motor. You WILL see a boost in power and torque, because Leo Vince's mufflers have been specially baffled and tuned to quiet the exhaust cycle, while at the same time enabling greater air/exhaust flow. And they ARE quiet...meeting European standard noise levels for road use - some of the strictest noise rules in the world. The header pipes are sealed with smooth, durable, 'tig' (tungsten inert gas) welds and they're made of AISI stainless to reduce 'bluing' (discoloration of the pipes - they can turn bluish near the engine.) AISI stainless steel is some of the finest your money can buy.

If you like performance, if you like mileage increases, you can have the best of both worlds by upgrading your exhaust system and fuel injection/carburation accordingly.

The Leo Vince 4 road's mostly run a bit less that $400.00...new jets usually for under $50.00. Labor will probably be a coupla hours. So for less than half the price of a trick new laptop, you can be kicking ass and sounding incredible when you're out running with your friends! The units look great too; they'll give a finalized, customized look to any scoot!

I know you take your scooter seriously or you wouldn't still be riding it. Why not take it to the next level and have these sweet pipes added to it? Do it a favor! Make it easier for it to run. Get that mileage and power boost you want easily! Look GREAT (at ANY cost) too!
